KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) – Leicester City frontman Jermaine Beckford is one of several players expected to arrive here yesterday for Jamaica’s World Cup final round qualifying tie with Panama scheduled for Friday.
The 29-year-old Beckford, currently on loan to Championship division Huddersfield Town, will be donning Reggae Boyz colours for the first time since agreeing to represent the Caribbean island.
He was called up for last month’s clash with Mexico but was forced out by injury.
Beckford has recovered just in time for the tie at the National Stadium, after being sidelined for the last weeks with a bothersome hamstring injury.
He played his first game on Saturday, entering as a 76th minute substitute as Huddersfield won 2-1 away to Leeds.
Beckford is expected to be joined here this evening by club mate Theo Robinson, who is on loan from Derby County.
The 24-year-old Robinson, who debuted for Jamaica against Mexico, has scored nine goals for Derby this season but yet to get on the scoresheet in Huddersfield colours.
Also expected last evening is Watford defender Nyron Nosworthy, Bristol City midfielder Marvin Elliott, Sheffield Wednesday’s forward Jermaine Johnson and Reading defender Adrian Mariappa who played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Premier League giants Manchester United.
Several other players including captain Donovan Ricketts, who represents Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer, are all scheduled to fly in on Sunday
Jamaica have one point in the CONCACAF standings following their goalless draw with Mexico at Estadio Azteca.
Following Friday’s contest at the National Stadium, Jamaica will travel to Costa Rica for another tie on March 16.
