PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – A friendly international between Trinidad and Tobago and Belize, originally scheduled for Trinidad, has been shifted to Belize City to be played a day later.
The game was shifted from next Friday in Couva to next Saturday in Belize City following discussions between officials of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) and the Belize Football Federation.
Officials of both bodies say the change was necessary due to logistical challenges associated with travel arrangements for Belize footballers.
“We at the federation feel a sense of disappointment over the fact that next Friday’s match against Belize will no longer be played on home soil and this came about because of circumstances that were beyond our control,” TTFF president Raymond Tim Kee explained.
“But in saying that, we felt it was necessary to ensure that the opportunity was still there for our men’s senior team to be able to play an international game because we could not afford to miss out on an international FIFA date”.
Both Belize and Trinidad and Tobago are using the match as part of their preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup scheduled to kick-off in July in the U.S.
The Soca Warriors begin their Gold Cup against El Salvador in New York on July 8 while Belize will open their campaign against USA on July 9.
“This is, of course, all part of the programme for our team’s build-up to the Gold Cup,” said Tim Kee looking ahead to the friendly clash.
“… and we wanted to ensure that this would not be a setback to the team’s preparations.”
Following the game, the T&T squad will travel to Lima to face Peru on March 26.
The Soca Warriors are also scheduled to play friendlies against Romania in Bucharest June 4 and Estonia June 7.
