Multiple Radio Frequencies only for repeating signals : …links required to broadcast to greater distances-Prime Minister Hinds

PRIME MINISTER Samuel Hinds has responded to reports made in sections of the media, that former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, doled out the national airwaves to his friends, saying that the issuances of multiple frequencies allows only for the repeating of the source signals. The Prime Minister was responding to questions on Friday last, while at a Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) weekly press engagement.
The previous day at the beginning of the parliamentary session he had made public all of the frequencies allotted to the 10 licensees in November 2011.
With source transmitters for the radio stations located in Georgetown, he explained that even with an optimum height of its antenna coupled with transmission power, the signal would only serve to broadcast in a 30 -mile radius.
The Prime Minister explained that in order for the radio broadcasts to be distributed to greater distances, it will have to be repeated through the different frequencies, hence the allocation of multiple frequencies to some of the companies that applied.
“You broadcast in Georgetown and want to take the signal some ways away, there are links that people may require that allow them to repeat the programme in another location.”
The Prime Minister said that the administration sought to accommodate the broadcasters based on the level of technology and apparatus the operators had acquired or would be using for broadcasting their signals.
The Prime Minister said that matter was very ‘technical’ but the government had worked along with the applicants for radio licenses so that each would be accommodated.
“I am not so sure people didn’t get what they asked for,” said Hinds in reference to the proposals made for Radio Licenses and proposed distance of transmission.
The Prime Minister in making public the documents had acquiesced to request from the Alliance for Change’s (AFC’s) executive member and Parliamentarian, Cathy Hughes.
Hinds in his written answer to the National Assembly indicated that of the 10 radio licenses that were issued in November 2011, seven would operate its source signal from Georgetown.
Alfro Alphonso & Sons Enterprise had been assigned one frequency, and as had been indicated in its application/proposal, will be based in Charity, Essequibo.
Lindener, Haslyn Grant was also assigned a frequency and has proposed to operate from a base in the mining town, while Little Rock Television’s application to operate out of New Amsterdam had been also approved.
Telecor & Cultural Broadcast Inc, Radio Guyana Company and the New Guyana Company Limited, were each assigned five frequencies in a bid to operate from Georgetown but would have repeaters stations to facilitate outlying communities.
Rudy Grant as well as Wireless Connections’ owner Maxwell Thom had each been approved a frequency.
The Hits and Jams Entertainment Group that currently also currently operates ‘HJ TV’ yesterday at 9:41hrs officially launched its broadcast on the frequency it was approved.
The other frequency was allocated to NTN Radio’s Anand Persaud.
The National Communication Network also operates a number of frequencies.
