A MAN and his reputed wife appeared in court yesterday as a result of the recent drug bust in the city.
Police reported finding 158 pounds of cannabis (marijuana) in the trunks of three motor cars.
Kurt Brown, 41 and Rochelle Gordon, both of Lot 45 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the joint charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that on March 9, at the Norton Street, Lodge address, they trafficked the 158 pounds of marijuana.
Police Inspector Burgette Grant, prosecuting, said ranks were conducting a raid when they went to the defendants’ address and found the narcotic in the vehicles.
The prosecutor said the trio was taken to Brickdam Police Station along with the prohibited substance which was weighed in their presence.
Defence counsel Peter Hugh, for Brown, requested reasonable bail, stating that the defendant is the owner of an auto sales business and is not the only person who has access to the vehicles.
Other lawyer, Ms. Latchmi Rahamat, representing Gordon, maintained that she is no way connected to the narcotic found.
Three children
She said Gordon has three children for Brown and resides at a back house in the same yard.
Rahamat argued that there is no evidence to connect Gordon to the crime.
However, the prosecutor said her facts differ, that the defendants are reputed husband and wife and Gordon had the keys for the vehicles when police were conducting the search.
Because no special reasons were advanced, the prosecutor asked that the defendants be remanded to prison and the magistrate so ruled.
The couple will remain incarcerated until May 2.
