Friendship murder trial – Judge rules caution statement was freely and voluntarily given

WHEN the Friendship murder trial voir dire (a trial within a trial) continued yesterday, Justice Dawn Gregory ruled that the caution statement, which was objected to by the number one accused, had been freely and voluntarily given to the police.

When the trial continues on Wednesday, another voir dire is expected to begin in relation to the number two accused.
At the direction of the judge, the statement of the number one accused, Steven Andrews, will be read to the jury at the substantive trial.
Stephen Andrews and Roger Vyphuis are indicted for the murder of Dulcie Trim, called Dolly’, on May 18, 2008. The voir dire had been held to determine admissibility of a caution statement said to have been given to the police by the number one accused.
Miss Sonia Parag, Attorney-at-Law, is appearing for Andrews; while Mr. Nigel Hughes, in association with Miss Candacey Rodney, is appearing for Vyphuis. Prosecutor Renita Singh, in association with Miss Diana Kaulesar, is conducting the case for the prosecution.
