WATCHED by a very large crowd which was entertained by the Majestic Sound System and the Ogle Tassa Group, Andre Gomes was declared the man-of-the-match, as Ogle Cricket Club defeated Golden Grove Cricket Club by eight wickets to take the East Coast Cricket Board/Elizabeth Styles-sponsored second division title last Sunday.
Golden Grove lost the toss and were instructed to bat first in brilliant sunshine and on a good batting wicket. They got a reasonably good start, reaching 46 for 2 after 11 overs, with Marvin Fitzpatrick and Oswin Blair at the crease.
But things went terribly bad for the visitors, who lost both Fitzpatrick who topscored with 47 (3×4) and Blair for 18(2×4, 1×6) in quick succession and folded for 100 off 28.3 overs.
Gomes snared 4 for 16 and Anand Persaud 3 for 22 for Ogle, who in their turn at the wicket reached to 104 for 2 from in the 21st over, after being 6 for 1 early on in their reply, with Fitzpatrick taking both wickets to fall for Ogle, for a miserly 20 runs.
Gomes and Khemraj Dindial were the men who staged their recovery, batting excellently with some marvellous stroke-making to entertain the vociferous crowd. Both Dindial and Gomes were unbeaten on 44 and 41 respectively, with the former hitting six fours and the latter five fours and one six.
ECCB president Bissoondyal Singh congratulated both teams for reaching the final and once again expressed happiness in seeing teams, who in the past found it difficult to reach the semi-finals, are now winning tournaments.
“This is really signalling great cricket development and I urge you to continue the hard work” said Singh, who also praised Mr Ashmul Ali and his executives for the hard work done in ensuring that the Ogle Community Centre was ready after many years to host hard ball cricket again.
Other players who did well in the preliminaries and were rewarded are: Chris Pattadin 140 (Ogle), Andre Gomes 80 (Ogle), Darshanand Pooran 62 (Ogle), Lalchan Jagmohan 52 (Mon Repos) and Aaron Barry 52 (Lions Xl).
