Officials to meet Moruca Bridge contractor over complaints

THE Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has sent officials to meet with the contractor doing work on the Kumaka San Jose Bridge in Moruca, amidst criticism from residents and political operatives.

Permanent Secretary, Mr. Collin Croal made the disclosure yesterday, during a press conference at the Fort Street, Kingston, Georgetown, Ministry, in the presence of Ministers Ganga Persaud and Norman Whittaker.
The Ministry had previously received a number of complaints about the $28.5M project in the Region One (Barima/Waini) sub- region, Croal revealed.
According to him, a ‘stop order’ was placed on the works being done there and an independent engineering team went to visit, after which a report was provided to the Ministry and it was studied.
Subsequently, regional officials headed into the area to check out the project site. Their intention is to meet with the contractor to identify a number of areas that ought to be rectified and discussed with the residents, Croal said.
He said one of the problem areas has to do with the ‘dress wood’ that was being used.
Croal said it has been reported that the bridge rails were rough and an examination of the Bill of Quantities indicated that the use of dress wood was required.
