THE Oswald Parry Hall at Bishops’ High School came alive recently when the institution held its Annual Prize Giving Ceremony, celebrating its outstanding CSEC 2012 performance and other highflier achievements.
Awards were presented in a variety of categories, but there was much euphoria when it was announced that Bishops’ High School had stood out nationally at the CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) 2012, with an overall pass mark of 97.5%. In 17 subjects, Bishops’ High School had 100% passes with Grades 1-3. Each candidate secured five subjects and over, with Grades 1-3.
Demonstrating its mettle as a national highflier, the school also scored a 95.5% pass rate at the CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) Examination in 2012 and students were given kudos for doing the institution proud.
The school also produced two of the best regional performers in CSEC 2012. Deowattie Narine was the best student in science subjects in the Fifth Form and she was awarded the Byrne Trophy, while Tamisha Maraj copped the Paul Baveghems Shield for being the best business student. They received their awards at a special prize-giving ceremony in Anguilla last December.
Trophies were also awarded to other top achievers at the academic level and in the area of sports.
Again, at the international level, students did Bishops’ High proud. Britany Van Lange was honoured for becoming an Olympian as a swimmer at the London 2012 Olympics. Van Lange also competed regionally before achieving that major milestone.
In recognition of their sterling performance, Bishops’ basketball players who won the Under-16 basketball competition, and the chess and table tennis players who placed 3rd in their respective competitions, were also honoured.Students honoured for top academic performance in individual categories were: Tevera Franklin – Best Student in Law (Sixth Form); Kaleshwar Singh – Best Performer in Chemistry/Physics; Lowanda Grundall – the Allen Trophy for the Best Student in English; and Nikita Johnson – Best Student in History.
All students with five or more distinctions at the CSEC exams were honoured with trophies and highfliers from Forms One to Six in individual subjects were also given due recognition, clinching valuable prizes and trophies.
Teachers with 10 years’ service and more were also recognized, compliments of the Parent-Teacher Association which presented them with gorgeous bouquets.
Meanwhile, the benevolence of overseas alumni who made presentations of computers and funded maintenance of the school’s computer labs was acknowledged.
The ceremony was chaired by a past student who graduated from the institution eight years ago – Dr. Sulan Fung, DDS. The feature address was delivered by another past student, Dr. Vivienne Mitchell-Amata, M.D. while prizes and trophies were presented by Mrs. Asha Ojha of the Parent-Teacher Association. The scribe was Joyce Sinclair, member of the Bishops’ High School Board of Directors.
