Cabinet approves US$464,212 to buy waste collection trucks

CABINET, earlier this week, granted its no-objection to a contract for the procurement of three waste collection trucks, all worth US$464,212.     Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon made the announcement yesterday, at his weekly media briefing in Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown. Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Norman Whittaker said the vehicles would be handed over to the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica) to, basically, assist with garbage collection on the East Coast of Demerara.
Meanwhile, the Georgetown Mayor & City Council (M&CC) is continuing to appeal to citizens to properly dispose of their refuse and be patient with the Municipality when they experience delays in the collection.
“Council is appealing to the general public and, particularly, to those who are affected by delays in collection, for their understanding and patience. Council is doing everything practicable to have all of its trucks working at optimum and to provide the vital service of collection to all citizens,” a release had said when several of its disposal trucks were not in operation recently.
The City Council, however, continues to collect waste from all sections of the capital and, for this year, claimed to have already expended about $60M in this area of responsibility.
Presently, five of its garbage trucks are in the mechanical workshop for repairs and other attention while two are working in different wards.
But Cevon’s Waste Management and Puran Brothers contractors are still providing disposal services.
