Some GGMC staff are sowing disharmony

ONCE again, it can be observed that some members of staff at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission(GGMC) are attempting to create disharmony between the Commission and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment which has responsibility for the agency. A recent online publication quoted a senior officer from the administration of the GGMC contradicting a statement made by the ministry the previous day. I see this as a blatant disregard of authority and gross disrespect to stakeholders within the sector.
Over the past few weeks there have been numerous reports of the Commission’s lapsed response in dealing with critical matters resulting in the escalation of hostility and endangering the lives of citizens within the mining sector. I refer specifically to the Marudi Mountain issue, where illegal mining was allowed to continue for years, when, in the first place the Commission was supposed to be doing its job. Equally guilty is the said company who owns the mining property for allowing illegal mining.
Mr. Editor, another instance in which the Commission has been slow in its response is the issue of water contamination from illegal mining in Region 1, which was reported to the Commission on several occasions. Now, there are also reports of an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea, suspected as a result of water contamination. Worst is the reported death of a seven-month-old toddler and other cases of sick adults. Who will take responsibility for the Commission’s lack of urgency in matters of critical importance?
In my opinion, the Commission needs to get its act together and acknowledge that the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has oversight responsibilities for its efficient functioning. Rather than making a fuss, the Commission should be focused on managing the natural resources of Guyana in an environmentally friendly and profitable manner and at the same time are cognizant of its role in serving miners and members of the public.
