WORLD Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) will be observed on March 15 and the local Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission said it is proud to be a part of the 2013 occasion, themed ‘Consumer Justice Now’.
The Commission said it is authorised, by law, to enforce the Consumer Affairs Act (CAA) 2011 in Guyana, in which a wealth of information, that consumers need to know when shopping, is contained.
The Commission said implementation of this law gives consumers greater responsibilities in order to uphold their rights and it is committed to ensuring that all consumers and suppliers in Guyana are well versed in their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the CAA.
As such, the Commission is taking the week surrounding WCRD as a period to inundate consumers and businesses with information as it relates to the CAA and will be focusing on the duties of suppliers, especially information to consumers on the return of goods.
The Commission said consumer protection can be used by suppliers as a tool to make them more competitive in the economic market and the Commission’s message to consumers is: “Knowledge is power; take responsibility for your purchases by knowing what you are buying before you buy it.”
