Opposition ideas exclude the national interest

ONE is certain that every Guyanese is encouraged anytime there is a media report that indicates a meeting of the executive and the opposition on matters of critical importance in the nation’s well being.

So many times prior, there have such indicators that gave rise to expectations of the two sides meeting so as to move the nation forward; but only to be disappointed because the opposition having other ideas, except those that include the national interest.
Again, it must be reiterated that given Guyana’s political peculiarities such difficulties can only be overcome by having the political will to arrive at solutions that will serve the nation’s best interests. It is the nation and its peoples that must come first in any consideration and not self-interest and display of political power.
The latter two have been the masthead of opposition parliamentary politics, particularly in this 10th Parliament. It has been a very unfortunate period for this nation, as much valuable time has been lost due to this reckless conduct.
Once again, there is indication that the two sides will meet to address, among other pivotal issues, the substantive appointments of the Chancellor of the Judiciary and the Chief Justice. The finalising of these two very important constitutional offices is central to the nation’s democratic platform. Thus, it is encouraging that Opposition Leader, Mr. David Granger, acknowledges “the seriousness of the issue at hand”, according to a media report. Based on some of the latter leader’s pronouncements at intervals, one discerns a willingness to do the things that are correct in the best interests of his country.
Since becoming political Leader of the Opposition, one is aware of the many challenges from the extremist fringe to his stewardship. But as an academic historian, he would have known of the difficulties of such situations and the kind of leadership required. One hopes that he takes the decisions for the well-being of the nation, inclusive of his many followers.
