RICHARD Gordon, who had admitted to breaking into a woman’s business premises to support his cocaine addiction, was yesterday sentenced to 22 months in jail by Providence Court Magistrate Leslie Sobers.
Gordon, 26, who said he could not remember his address, pleaded guilty to a charge that said between February 26 and 27 last at Samatta Point, East Bank Demerara, he broke into the business premises of Kareen Archer and stole items worth $220,300.
Gordon also pleaded guilty to another charge which said that on February 27 last at Grove Housing Scheme, also on the East Bank of Demerara, he was found in possession of a two-edged, sharp instrument without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.
A third charge, to which he pleaded not guilty, stated that between February 2 and 14 last at Kaneville (another East Bank Demerara location) he broke into the dwelling house of Gregory Bobb and stole a quantity of clothing, gas bottles, a blender, iron, and other items, all worth $277,000.
Police Sergeant Shellon Daniels, prosecuting, informed the court that Gordon, a fisherman, had committed similar offences and had been imprisoned before. “By time he out, he in again,” she said.
Daniels said Gordon had given police a statement in which he confessed to being a cocaine addict. He also claimed in the statement that he had committed the break-in so that he could support his habit, the prosecutor related.
Gordon complained to the court that even after he had pleaded guilty, he was beaten by the police. He said he had been smoking cocaine for four years.
He was sentenced to 24 months on the break and enter and larceny charge and nine months for having an offensive weapon. The third matter will be continued on March 22.
