Woman posing as Chronicle employee on fraud charge

A WOMAN, falsely claiming to be an employee of Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL), appeared in court yesterday, charged with fraudulent conversion.
Before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, the defendant, Lavina Mattai, 35, of Lot 34 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty.

altParticulars of the offence said, between May 1 and 31, 2012, being solely entrusted, by Andrea Jackman, with a quantity of perfumes, body lotions, lip gloss and other articles valued a total of $203,000, to sell and return the proceeds, she fraudulently converted the money to her own use and benefit.
The virtual complainant told the court that Mattai claimed she works at the newspaper company but a visit to the Guyana Chronicle proved that to be untrue.
Jackman said it took a while to find the defendant’s correct address.
Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hosannah, prosecuting, requested substantial bail to ensure that the defendant returns for trial and the surety was set at $80,000.
Meanwhile, the defendant was ordered to report to Providence Police Station, also on the East Bank of Demerara every Monday until the case is concluded.
It will be called, again, on March 14.
