ANYONE who is objective will conclude that Guyana has one of the most openly transparent bidding processes among the Caricom states.
As evidence, one must refer to the recently released document on the functional process of NICIL and its sister arm, the Privatisation Unit. This information gave what can be described as a comprehensive step-by- step process, all the way to Cabinet approval. But as usual, Kaieteur News is in the forefront of its usual campaign of misleading the public. But time will prove the detractors and their distortions wrong.
One will conclude that the same process has been applied to the Marriott deal, although the opposition political parties and their affiliate unions would have the nation believe otherwise.
But the bigger picture is being missed – the eventual benefits that the completed project will eventually bequeath to the nation in the form of the first world hospitality services. It will also lift the bar as far as competition is concerned.
On a wider scale, the issue of the Marriott has now become a battle between the forces of progress versus those of vested interests. It was inconceivable that a major input in the nation’s hotel industry would not have taken place. After all, great changes are taking place internationally, and one cannot talk about globalisation, without its competitive input. This is what the Marriot project is all about.
