ANIL Lachhman took top honours in the Men’s Singles 501, when the curtain came down last Sunday night for the Guyana Darts Association (GDA)-organised Mashramani Darts Classic at the Clerico Club (CCWU).
He upset the national champion Sudesh Fitzgerald 3 games to 1 in the best-of-5 set, winning the first, second and fourth games of the set, while Fitzgerald took the third, to chalk up his first lien on the Len’s Trophy and also walk away with $40 000 top prize.
Fitzgerald took home the runner-up prize of $20 000 and the losing semi-finalists Ricardo Madhoo and Anthony Bissoondyal collected $10 000 each, thanks to the kind courtesy of John Fernandes Limited who sponsored that category.
In the Women’s Singles 501, there was another upset when Rosetta Hiralall got the better of national champion Hemwattie Amyan 2 games to 1 in the best-of-3 games set.
Amyan was not at her best, having returned directly from Suriname where she attended the funeral of her ex-husband Ronald Amyan (the former national player) who lost his life by drowning on February 17.
This event was co-sponsored by Dr Terrence Joseph and Roy & Sonia Fashions of Stabroek Market, with the winner receiving $20 000 while the losing finalist received $10 000. The two losing semi-finalists Shondell Hyles and Shabana Ali got $5 000 each.
The Open Doubles 501 event, sponsored by the Guyana Oil Company Limited, was won by Lachhman and Lalchand Rambharose who got the better of Fitzgerald and Hiralall, 2 games to nil to take the $30 000 prize and left their opponents to take home the second-place purse of $20 000.
In the play-off for third and fourth places, the pair of Bissoondyal and Sherwin Greene prevailed over Colin France and Shondell Hinds by a 2-0 margin to cart off the $12 000 purse, with the losers taking home $8 000.
There were also three incentive prizes awarded for special performances, with France receiving $5 000 for the lone maximum 180 thrown in the various events and Fitzgerald (170) the same amount for the highest checkout.
The shortest/fastest game (16 darts), which had a prize of $5 000, went to Sudesh Fitzgerald and Rosetta Hiralall while special mention was made of Shondell Hyles who registered the highest throw (160) for women.
