Tourism Ministry to Mash under theme ‘We discover our home, celebrating our diversity’ : –Media given sneak peek at costumes

THE Tourism Ministry has given the media a sneak preview of the 2013 Mashramani costumes with which they would take to the streets come Mash Day, Saturday, February 23rd, 2013. Speaking with the media briefly, yesterday at the Sophia Convention Centre, Mashramani Events Coordinator, Mr. Ohene Koana displayed the costumes, created under the theme ‘We discover our home, celebrating our diversity’.
The costumes depicted Guyana’s national flag, The Golden Arrowhead, and its motto: One People, One Nation, One Destiny’ as displayed by the revellers.
He said this costume is expected to portray our culture, and promote Guyana as a tourist destination, encouraging overseas-based Guyanese and others to come and visit Guyana.

He explained that the entire costume has not been completed, and that the ministry would be participating under the medium size category, and is looking to top this category.

His lament was that, over the years, the ministry has participated and has even placed second in this category, and would doubtless be looking to win the competition this year.

Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali echoed similar sentiments regarding the sneak preview, noting that the main float has not been included, but will showcase Guyana as a tourism destination.

He explained that the costume is also expected to showcase Guyana’s rich heritage and historic architecture that is around Georgetown.

Guyana‘s tourism package is built around nature and the vast hinterland’s cultural and historic ambience.

The ministry had created special advertisements to highlight upcoming events in Guyana, and has so done with the upcoming Mashramani celebrations, advertising same in Suriname, Brazil, the Caribbean, and North America. Advertising, he indicated, will follow for all other holiday events in Guyana.

He also mentioned the street party dubbed Mash- a- Rama, which would take place on Friday evening, February 22, in Brickdam, outside the Ministry of Housing, and would see local and international performances, including from a 20-member samba band from Brazil.

The ministry would also be advertising around the world the local itinerary for celebrating Easter in Guyana as the next tourism package.
