POLICE were yesterday, still hunting for the man suspected of having torched his house on Sunday after he discovered that a couple had moved into it in his absence.
The man, in a rage, doused the place and lit it afire because a man and a pregnant woman refused to move out from the Lot 1 East Front Patentia Squatting Area, West Bank Demerara.
Trevor Thomas alias ‘Moey’ had built the small wooden cottage about three years ago but abandoned it for several months.
However, surprisingly, upon his return, he found a man called ‘Flex’ and his expectant companion in residence and asked them to vacate but they refused.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said the Police launched an investigation into the arson after the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) contained the blaze.
No one was in occupancy at the time of the 10:30 hrs conflagration.
Another fire, at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, gutted a second dwelling house the same day.
It was started when a kerosene lamp was left unattended and, as a result, the occupant of the building has been displaced.
Drug addict
That originated about 01:00 hrs at Lot 163 Seventh Street, LBI, where a drug addict lived in a property owned by an overseas-based Guyanese.
The GFS worked diligently and prevented the flames there from spreading to nearby houses.
In a third incident, investigators are probing a fire, of so far unknown origin, which occurred at about 01:40hrs yesterday, at Moleson Creek Police Outpost, Corentyne, Berbice.
The GFS also responded to that and extinguished it after minor damage.
