The IAC believes that such attacks cannot be seen as confined to the Chinese involved in the project, but one that is directed to the wider Chinese community that has made this land their home.
The body says that given what has transpired, it is not oblivious to the racial undertones of these unwarranted attacks, and wishes to remind that such actions are not only dangerous and disrespectful, but counterproductive to the existing harmony among the diverse ethnicities that comprise this nation.
In this regard, the IAC says, it forthrightly condemns these attacks on the Chinese, and demands that the perpetrators immediately cease their wanton attempts to fracture the harmony alluded to. The IAC also wishes to note that this is not the first instance in which an ethnic group has been singled out for attacks by the perpetrators mentioned.
“The nation’s history will reflect the many unprovoked attacks directed at Guyanese of East Indian ancestry. As such, the IAC ponders as to whom or which ethnic group will become the next target of the said perpetrators. The IAC therefore calls on civil society and all Guyanese to condemn and demand an end to these attacks” the statement said.
Moreover, while it is concerned, the IAC said, it is not surprised that the said group that perpetrates the attacks is once again seeking opportunity to derail a transformative project that has immense benefits for the nation and its peoples. The IAC calls on those responsible for the attacks to be mindful of their actions, which can harm this young nation and its international image, the body’s press release has said.
