Back then, the home team started the final day with a deficit of 124, and were bowled out for 58 off 28 overs in their second innings, as Guyana were indebted to the bowling of Narsingh Deonarine, whose 7-26 ensured the Barbadians were dismissed for their lowest score at this level since 1966.
Scores to date: Barbados 367 and 235 for 7 declared, Guyana 225 and 283 .
Guyana resumed their second innings on 94 for 1 in search of 378 for victory, with skipper Leon Johnson on 39 and Rajendra Chandrika 40 and lost both of their overnight batsmen, with Javon Searles accounting for Chandrika who was caught by Ashley Nurse at gully, while Nurse bowled Johnson.
Chandrika did not add to his overnight score, facing 81 balls and hitting six fours while batting for 114 minutes, with Johnson adding one to his overnight score, batting for 117 minutes where he faced 75 deliveries, hitting four fours and two sixes, leaving Guyana on 109 for 3 at his demise.
The 100 was posted by Steven Jacobs, who turned Searles to long leg for two in the 27th over, following which he hit Nurse back over his head for six, followed by a four in consecutive overs, but his team lost wickets at regular intervals.
A magnificent catch by Kyle Hope, who flung himself to his left at mid on to hold onto a lofted drive from a nervous-looking Assad Fudadin (3) off Nurse, sent the left handed West Indies middle order batsman back into the pavilion.
Christopher Barnwell replaced Fudadin but did not last long, going via lbw to a lively Christopher Jordan for 8 at 162 for 5, before Jacobs audaciously pulled Jordan to long on for his sixth four to raise his 50, batting for 97 minutes, facing 63 balls and hitting one six as well.
Jordan had a broad smile on his face two balls later, when he induced Jacobs to pull a short delivery straight to Hope at backward square leg and at lunch, Guyana who lost five wickets in the session while adding 79 runs, were 173 for 6 with Derwin Christian on 4 and Zaheer Mohammed-Shadir 1.
After lunch, Mohammed-Shadir and Christian continued to defy the Barbados bowling attack, batting freely to post their 50-run partnership off 97 deliveries, counting six fours between them, including an authoritative straight drive by Christian off Jonathan Carter, pushing the score to 220 for 6.
Christian was given a life by Hope at deep cover, as he looked to hit Roston Chase over that area when on 29, with Guyana 230 for 6 and Mohammed-Shadir 28, before Mohammed-Shadir struck Roston Chase for two fours in the 71st over, realising his team’s 250 with the second boundary.
They pushed their seventh-wicket partnership to 88, before Christian needlessly pulled a delivery from Miguel Cummins straight to Jordan at midwicket, after facing 69 deliveries and hitting four of them to the ropes and batting for 119 minutes. He was quickly followed by Devendra Bishoo who was caught at slip by Jordan without scoring.
Guyana were staring down the barrel of defeat at 255 for 8, as the beanpole-like figure of Ronsford Beaton strolled to the wicket to join Mohammed-Shadir but did not last long, going via lbw to Cummins without scoring.
Mohammed-Shadir got to his half-century off 94 balls, batting for 119 minutes and hitting seven fours and celebrated with an audacious drive for four off Cummins’ first delivery of the 77th, following which Keon Joseph, who showed signs of a middle order batsman, unleashed a straight drive of his own back past Cummins to push Guyana closer to the 300-run mark.
They did not reach there, however, as Joseph was bowled by Nurse for 13, leaving Mohammed-Shadir unbeaten on 58 scored off 112 balls with eight fours while he was at the crease for 144 minutes, defying the bowling of Cummins, Nurse and Jordan who took three wickets each for 55, 59 and 68 runs respectively.
The teams will return to the same venue tomorrow, when they do battle in the Super50 category of this year’s regional first class season.
