Nephew charged with shooting at aunt refused bail

OSAFFA Yarde, 27, of Lot 154 Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown was refused bail yesterday, on a charge of discharging a loaded firearm at his aunt.

The defendant appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which alleged that, on January 24, he fired the gun at Georgina Reynolds, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause her grievous bodily harm.
Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hossanah, prosecuting, successful objected to pre-trial freedom for the defendant, based on the seriousness of the crime.
She informed the court of the relationship between the defendant and the virtual complainant and said they, frequently argue.
The prosecutor said, that day, the defendant was washing his car when some water went into the virtual complainant’s and, when she spoke to him about it, they began to argue.
The prosecutor said the defendant became angry, pointed the gun in the direction of his aunt and fired a shot, which strayed and hit the defendant’s brother and the incident was reported.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Dexter Todd made an impassioned plea for the defendant’s liberty but the magistrate told the lawyer the nature of the case is very serious, as a gun was used and the court has already made a ruling.
However, she suggested that he can take his application to the High Court.
