Citizens urged to make use to electronic crime reporting system

THE Home Affairs Ministry is urging citizens to make full use of ‘On Line Crime Reporting System (OCRS), an initiative which was officially launched in October 2012.

It allows citizens who possess or have access to cell phones, computers and other internet connected Information Technology (IT) devices to report crimes to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Citizens who have witnessed a crime or have information on any criminal activity, can use their cell phones, blackberry devices, tablets and computers to send images, sound recordings, video, text messages and even website URLs to the police.
Moreover, the OCRS is designed to protect persons who wish to remain anonymous. A review of the use of the facility for the period July 18 to December 14, 2012 revealed that 51 reports were made to the Police by members of the public.
A total of 52 offences were identified from the reports and the police was able to make seven arrests arising from the reports.
The GPF is continuing its investigations into the reports which have provided a great deal of intelligence to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Meanwhile, efforts are being made by the Ministry to add other features to the facility to make it more user-friendly.
The indications from those reports are that the crimes and offences that are of greater concern to the Public are: drug trafficking, robberies, damage to property (caused mainly by stray animals), and domestic violence.
