Dancing & wining sparked murder at West Demerara wedding house

JUSTICE Roxanne George and a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes yesterday heard how dancing and wining at a West Bank Demerara wedding house resulted in the murder of Anil Persaud, called Bobby, of Bella Dam, Pouderoyen by the accused, Yougeshwar Shivdyal, in 2009. A witness who had attended the wedding reception testified yesterday that Anil Persaud, called Bobby, was dancing when trouble started after the accused, Shivdyal, went up to Bobby and started wining in front of him.

When that happened, the now deceased Anil Persaud reputedly accosted the accused, and an argument ensued between them, during which the accused is alleged to have used a knife to inflict injuries on Anil Persaud, who later died at the Georgetown Hospital.

Miss Rhondel Weever, associated with Miss Natasha Backer, is conducting the case for the prosecution. Mr. Peter Hugh, Attorney-at-law, is defence counsel.

In delivering her opening address to the jury, Prosecutor Weever said the accused allegedly committed the offence on March 1, 2009; and at the time of the incident, the deceased, Anil Persaud, called Bobby, was 29 years old and lived at Bella Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.

She said that some time during the evening of March 1, 2009, the accused, Shivdyal, and the deceased, Anil Persaud, called Bobby, were at a wedding house at Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank, Demerara.

Kushur Sureshpaul, called Bobby; Aril Persaud, brother of the deceased, and Mahendra Singh were also present at the said wedding house, and are witnesses in the case.

The State’s contention, according to the prosecutor, is that, while at the wedding house, Anil Persaud, called Bobby, was dancing when the accused started to wine in front of him; whereupon Anil Persaud accosted the accused and an incident occurred between them. It is alleged that, at this stage, the accused used a knife to inflict injuries on Anil Persaud.

Arvin Persaud then took his brother, Anil Persaud, to the Best Hospital, from where he was later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital by ambulance, but subsequently died.

The trial is continuing.
