PRESIDING Judge Navindra Singh imposed a 10-year penalty on Chandrapaul Chatteram, who had faced a trial for murder after beating Gopaul Singh with a beer bottle at a Better Hope wedding house brawl in 2007, after a Demerara Assizes jury found Chatteram not guilty of murder, but guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter. The deceased had suffered a fractured skull in that incident.

Defence lawyer Mr. Peter Hugh, in a plea of mitigation, had asked for leniency.

Prosecutors in the matter were Mrs. Konyo Thompson and Ms. Dhanika Singh.
