Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited in partnership with the University of Guyana, last Thursday, presented awards to Rebecca Persaud and Saudia Majeed for their outstanding performances and graduation from the university in 2012. This award ceremony for the most outstanding students in the Faculty of Social Sciences was held at the Bank’s Head Office, New Market Street, Georgetown.

Saudia Majeed received the Republic Bank Limited Award for the Best Graduating Student with a diploma in Banking and Finance, and a monetary gift.
Making the opening remarks at the award ceremony, Managing Director of the bank, Mr. John Alves said that the bank believes that academic excellence is critical to Guyana’s national development, and studies in the social sciences are very important and key as this discipline aids in the creation of better societies.
“Our partnership with the University of Guyana continues to support our social investment goals in complementary initiatives such as our ongoing sponsorship of a student scholarship, subscription to business journals for the university library and career coach which prepares final year students for the world of work,” he added.
Addressing the two high achievers, he noted that their successful completion of this period of academic study can be attributed to their dedication, discipline and drive, which are all critical skills on the path to future success.
“And so, Rebecca and Saudia, I therefore challenge you to apply your newly-earned knowledge and skills in your chosen career pursuit in a way that will contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s and your own upliftment,” he asserted.
He extended congratulations to the two young ladies on behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited, and expressed his hope that they will continue to inspire others to have the power to succeed.
These awards were presented as a part of the Bank’s ‘Power to Make a Difference’ initiative, a venture which seeks to ignite the potential of Guyana’s youths through varying rewards and developmental programmes.
