Current works at Skeldon should impact industry capacity : – Armogan

SKELDON Estate will rise to the task, despite a shortfall in its production, Chairman of Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), Mr. David Armogan, said on Monday. Speaking at a press briefing in the Boardroom of the Region Six administration, he said the  Government of Guyana is optimistic that remedial works, currently being done by a South African company at the sugar factory, will result in a major impact on the industry’s capacity in the ‘Ancient County’.

Armogan, in an end-of-year report, revealed that Skeldon factory has suffered a production shortfall of 1,184 tonnes of sugar.

“However we are hoping that the Skeldon factory will rise up to the task. Work is being carried out by a team of South Africans to improve the ability of the state-of-the-art factory. It is quite timely, since it is being done during the current out-of-crop season. Skeldon had targeted yield of 34,491 tonnes, but the factory milled 33,307 tonnes during 2012,” he said.

Armogan reported that the three East Berbice sugar estates recorded 90 percent of their targeted 133,355 tonnes, with Albion producing 54,022 tonnes and Rose Hall 34,429 tonnes.
The Region Six estates accounted for 56 percent of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) production of 218,054 tonnes sugar in 2012.
