THE memory of seventeen Berbice Test cricketers will be etched in the minds of the citizenry following the erection of a special photographic billboard at Port Mourant, Corentyne, in the Ancient County. The historical billboard, measuring 16ft x 8ft and sponsored by Ansa McAl Group of Companies, was planted at Port Mourant, a place where seven of those West Indian cricketers were born and where they had commenced playing for the local club, many years ago.
Those remembered for their input to cricket on the international landscape during a 64-year span (1948-2012) are: John Trim, Clayton Lambert, Basil Butcher, Narsingh Deonarine, Joseph Solomon, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Ivan Madray, Brandon Bess, Roy Fredericks, Devendra Bishoo, Leonard Baichan, Assad Fudadin, Sewdat Shivnarine, Veerasammy Permaul, along with relatives Rohan Kanhai, Mahendra Nagamootoo and Alvin Kallicharran.
Speaking at the location site, obliquely opposite the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre, just off the northern carriageway of the Corentyne main thoroughfare, the Public Relations Officer of Ansa McAl Ms Darshanie Yussuf, said her organisation which in involved in the sponsorship of several sporting activities nationally, in recognising past and present cricketers who represented this nation at the highest level is optimistic that the venture will challenge upcoming players to excel.
Prior to handing over the billboard, Berbice Branch Manager Mark Bichai noted that the project, which is one or several undertaken by the company as it celebrates its 20th anniversary, is expected to serve as a role model for upcoming cricketers.
In accepting the landmark poster, president of the Berbice Cricket Board, Keith Foster, noted that Port Mourant was highlighted on the map of Guyana due to the great cricketers who emerged from the community, and thereafter playing at the national and regional levels.
He posited that in addition to the seven players who emerged from the Port Mourant Cricket Club, five evolved from its Albion counterpart.
