JAMAL Baptiste (no address given) was refused bail yesterday, on a robbery with aggravation charge.
He pleaded not guilty, before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, to the offence, particulars of which said, on January 18, he robbed Mahendra Pooran of one BlackBerry cell phone valued $40,000.
Police Corporal Kerry Bostwick, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was walking along Main Street, Georgetown when the defendant, in company with another person, approached him and asked for $100.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant ignored them but they continued to follow him and, in the vicinity of Guyana Stores, the defendant pushed Pooran against a wall and the other person held on to him while the defendant took away the phone.
The prosecutor said the robbers attempted to escape but the virtual complainant raised an alarm and Police in the area gave chase and apprehended the defendant although his accomplice managed to escape.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail on the grounds of the defendant being a flight risk and has no fixed place of abode.
The case will be called, again, on February 8.
