LINDO Junior Davis, of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, who stole two gold chains from Berbice Divisional Crime Chief Marlon Chapman on Boxing Day 2012, was sentenced to one year imprisonment on Monday.
He pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in New Amsterdam Court.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherrif, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was at the Hang Out Bar on Matthew Allen Road, New Amsterdam, when the convict snatched the jewels, valued $1,275,000 and escaped.
The jewellery was sold but, subsequently, recovered and Davis was apprehended at Springlands, Corentyne, also in Berbice, from where he was attempting to flee the jurisdiction, the prosecutor said.
Asked by the magistrate what he had to say, prior to sentencing, the thief replied:”I don’t know what I was on that night. I did not know it was the Crime Chief”.
Previously convicted burglar gets 20 years sentence
PREVIOUSLY convicted Jermaine Fraser known as Herman Fraser, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, was, on Monday, sentenced to a total of 20 years imprisonment on four counts of burglary.
He pleaded guilty to the crimes which were committed on stallholders of the New Amsterdam Market and Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo ordered that two of the four sentences run consecutively, meaning that the prisoner would spend ten years in jail.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherrif, prosecuting, told the Court that, between October 22 and 23, 2012, the burglar concealed himself in the market prior to its closure and broke into the jewellery stall of Ramona Hussain and removed a quantity of diamond, silver and gold jewels, valued a total of $1.5M.
During the same period, he took the lock off another stall owned by Patrick Williams called ‘Plantain’ and stole clothing and footwear worth $110,000.
Between October 30 and 31 last, Fraser broke and entered the Secret End Liquor Restaurant, at Main and St. Magdalene Street, owned by Eric Hubbard and stole a laptop computer, a bottle of ‘Grey Goose’ liquor and cash with a total value of $163,000.
Then, on November 6, he burglarised the Future Vision DVD Club and Gift Shop at Main and St. John Streets, owned by Tariq Bacchus, from where 49 cellular phones, four digital cameras, one MP4, one MP5, 2 solar chargers and a laptop computer bag, all worth $2,342,000, wee stolen.
The Prosecutor said images of the thief were caught on the surveillance camera, he who had earlier removed several ventilation blocks from the washroom of the premises.
Asked by the magistrate, what he had to say, the convict replied:”I just want a light sentence.”
