Thousands join in Chinese New Year celebration

THOUSANDS went to the National Park in Georgetown last Sunday to join the Chinese community in celebrating both the Chinese New Year and the 160th Anniversary of the Arrival of Chinese in Guyana.

altOn the important occasion, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds hailed the growth of Guyana-China diplomatic relations, focusing on the past 40 years and highlighting Chinese contributions to the economic landscape of Guyana.
He noted that the ties have transformed the relationship into a more dynamic, comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership that encompasses active cooperation across a wide spectrum.
The Prime Minister, at the time performing the duties of President, lauded the contributions of Chinese businesses to Guyana and expressed the hope that there would be joint partnerships with the local private sector in the future.
Deputy Director-General of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr. Lu Haitian observed that, since altthe first groups of Chinese were brought here as indentured servants 160 years ago, they have been involved in a variety of economic activities, including with sugar, rice, mining, timber, trade, medicine, law and diplomacy.

President of the Chinese Association, Mr. Shilong Wong, said Chinese have become part of the Guyanese society and are contributing to the country’s development in a healthy manner.
The fair highlighted Chinese music, cuisine, calligraphy, dance, clothing, furniture and more. Guyanese also did their part in the cultural presentation and there were dances from the National School of Dance, instructor Kenrick Cheeks altand a fashion display from Sonia Noel models on the programme.
This month marks the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the Chinese to Guyana. On January 12, 1853, on the ship Glenntaner, 305 men arrived in Georgetown.
The year of the Black Snake began on February 10.  The Snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 Animal Signs. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a snake in the house is a good omen because it means that your family will not starve.
