PALADIN Security Firm owner and president of the Bounty Colts Basketball Club, Michael Singh, was on Sunday last unanimously voted in as president of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) when elections were held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The GABA was under the supervision of then vice-president Kester Gomes, after the body, led by David Carto, saw all of its executives make an exodus citing various reasons for leaving. Gomes had made it public that he was not interested in being re-elected.
Singh would have Melanie Patriots’ Kevin Amsterdam as his vice-president, veteran and former senior national centre Ian Andrews as secretary, Ravens head coach Darcel Harris in the position of treasurer and Eagles’ Adrian Hooper will serve as the assistant secretary/treasurer.
It’s not yet a full year since Singh was brought into the game as an administrator of the Bounty Colts Basketball Club – the same team of which he was a member, playing under the late Phillip George.
Upon taking office, Singh said that his immediate focus would be to rebuild the association’s image of the game in the city, stating that Georgetown is the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) largest affiliate. A relationship with corporate Guyana is needed for the sustenance of the body and growth of the sport.
He told the media and clubs gathered that his handling of the GABA will be no different from that at Bounty Colts, stating that “(at Colts) I took about 30 young men and embraced them as my own, from finding sponsorship to mentoring. I pioneered rebuilding the club”.
“I have 14 teams now that I have to call my own. It will be the same love, the same commitment that I have shown since I am around. The assets and networks I have I will be putting into to get this going. From this day, we have to consider ourselves moving forward,” Singh said.
Getting the game popular again in and around Georgetown is also on the agenda, while setting a year-round plan for the game that would see the sport being played at all levels and the return of competitions both in and outdoors.
The newly formed executive will soon meet to put the plans discussed into action immediately with Singh stating that enough time has been wasted.
