WELL known city resident, Imitaz Roopnarine, 47, called “Bobby”, was killed at about 05:00hrs yesterday when three men on two motor cycles shot him as he and a woman emerged from the Cool Square Hotel, West Ruimveldt. Roopnarine was pronounced dead on arrival at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and no arrest has been made as yet but investigations are continuing.
Reports said that Roopnarine, who was surprised when he saw the men tried to escape but he was quickly stopped as the men descended on him and he was cut down when he was hit by a bullet to his head.
As news of the killing spread, many flocked to comfort his wife and daughters at their 208 Mandela Avenue, Georgetown residence.
The father of two tried desperately to escape but was overwhelmed by the gunmen, who went after him as he sprinted from the premises of the hotel.
At his home yesterday morning a large group of close friends and relatives had gathered discussing the incident and told this publication that they believe that their loved one was the victim of an armed robbery and he resisted and was killed.
They said that several pieces of gold jewellery that Roopnarine was wearing at the time was taken from him as well as his wallet and an undisclosed sum of money he had left home with on Wednesday night.
The woman he was with was not injured in the shooting.
Friends said that Roopnarine left home on Wednesday night to go socialise with some friends as is customary and it is unsure how much money he left with since he was a lavish spender and may have been trailed to the location and killed.
Close friends yesterday morning told the Guyana Chronicle that Roopnarine was a very generous person and known to many given his friendly outlook he was well known and loved and his death came as a total shock.
The man’s wife reportedly turned up at the scene and identified the body and is the mother of his two daughters, ages seven and two.
Roopnarine was employed with Hareshnarine “Chiney” Sugrim, the head of GuyTrac in Alexander Village, Greater Georgetown.
