Annual Qaseeda Competition at Anna Catherina Complex

THE picturesque Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC), Guyana’s leading Muslim Centre on the West Coast of Demerara,  will be the January 26 and 27 venue for 11th annual National Qaseeda Competition. The event, for which the best of Guyana’s Qaseeda singers will converge on the stage, is part of the activities to mark Eid Milad un Nabi 2013 being co-hosted by the Guyana United Sad’r Islamic Anjuman.
It is being partly sponsored by Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) and the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO).
Participants are required to render their songs in no more than four minutes in Urdu language and points will be awarded for choice of qaseedas, manner of dress, pronunciation, melody etc.
At the end of the contest, prizes and trophies will be presented.
Convenor for this year is ACIC’s Hakeem Khan and, like all other years, will have guest participation from Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Suriname.
The Suriname delegation will be led by President of the Hedaytul Islam, Al Haj Basheer Khodabux while the Trinidad & Tobago team will be headed by Chairman of its International Qaseeda Committee, Imaam Ahmad Hoosein.
Secretary of the International Muslim Organisation (IMO) of Toronto, Canada, will also grace the event.
The organisers have ensured, over the years, that judging of the contest is of the highest standards and only qualified persons are selected as judges.
This year, again, judges are from Suriname, India and Bangladesh. Since last year, the Committee had secured corporate sponsorship and apart from GT&T and NAMILCO, other sponsors are Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), Sterling Products Limited, M. Ali & Son General Store (New Amsterdam, Berbice), Guyana Beverage Company, Farouk & B. A. Amin & Sons and H. Mohamed General Store.
The singing of Qaseedas is a form of showing love, respect and honour to the Beloved Prophet of Islam, Muhammad and the tradition was brought to Guyana from the Indian sub-continent in the 1830s. It came in the traditional Urdu but can be rendered in any language and, in present day Islam, Qaseedas exist in every language which Muslims speak.
