Roach rapt with Brisbane’s Heat big performance

KEMAR Roach says he would love to return to Australia to play in the Big Bash League again after he helped Brisbane to a 34-run win over the Perth Scorchers in last night’s Big Final. Roach finished with figures of 3-18 off his four overs to help Brisbane restrict Perth’s run chase and he was ably assisted by Ben Cutting (2-31) and Alistair McDermott (2-21).
Nathan Hauritz did the hard work without reward and finished with 0-11 off three overs to go along with three catches.
Roach said he had gained great experience in his time with Brisbane.
“(I’ll) definitely be back,” he said.
“It’s only a one-year contract, but I’d love to be back here and continue gaining some experience in my Twenty20 career.
“(It’s) probably the best organised Twenty20 competition in the world and I’m really glad to be a part of it.”
Brisbane only made it through to the Big Bash League final with a win in their last regular-season game over the Hobart Hurricanes and they were forced to beat top-seeded Melbourne Renegades and then travel to Perth to claim the title.
Roach said, while the thought of winning the whole tournament had not crossed the team’s mind, they kept a positive approach throughout.
“We were going into each game trying to relax because we were always the underdogs,” he said.
“So just going into each game relaxed and trying to play the best cricket possible.
“We got to the final and won tonight.”
Roach echoed the words of opposition captain Simon Katich and said he felt Brisbane’s total of 167 was slightly below the par score on the pitch, but that their bowling won them the match.
“We thought we were 10-15 runs short with the bat, but we’ve seen it was a very competitive score,” Roach said.
“We went out there with the ball and took the wickets and put them under pressure.
“To get Shaun Marsh out early and then consistently keeping our line and length tight that’s what won us the game tonight.”
Queensland, who sit top of the Sheffield Shield standings and are third in the Ryobi Cup, will have the opportunity to complete a first-ever treble for the Sunshine state in Australian domestic cricket if they can win the other two competitions.
