Justice Kennard elected to head GHRA : … Clubs release dates for this year’s meetings

HAVING been nominated to head its Interim Management Committee (IMC) following several internal problems, Retired Chancellor of the Judiciary, Chief Justice Cecil Kennard, was recently reelected president of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), when that entity held its election of office-bearers at Bush Lot, Corentyne-based Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) last Sunday. The executives who were tasked to oversee the affairs of the country’s horse racing body, also include Roopnarine Matadial and Fazal Habibula, who will both serve as vice-presidents to Kennard, Denzie Goring (secretary), Compton Sancho (assistant secretary) and Francis ‘Chico’ Chichester (treasurer).
Kris Jagdeo, Dennis De Roop, Lakeram Sookdeo and Lennie Singh were all elected as Committee Members while De Roop and Mohamed ‘Nanko’ Sheriff were named as the Horse Owners and Trainers’ Representatives, with Ivan Dipnarine the Jockeys’ representative.
Chichester, Matadial, De Roop, Sookdeo and Quaicy Henry were all named as stewards of the GHRA, even as Matadial, De Roop, Habibula, Chattergoon Ramnauth and Turbo Jagdeo were named the new Classifiers of the GHRA, with Marcel Crawford, a Senior Counsel by profession, being given the responsibility of Legal Adviser.
Meanwhile, with the aim of avoiding any mix-up with dates for events scheduled to be held around the horse racing fraternity this year, the newly elected body has ratified the racing dates mentioned below, as official, for clubs affiliated to that body.
This year’s action gallops off today at the Budhan Memorial Turf Club while in February, the Bush Lot Turf Club will host their meeting on the 3rd while 21 days later, Rising Sun Turf Club will have its first of five scheduled meetings of the year.
The KMTC club will swing into action in March, hosting its first meeting on 24th, with Port Mourant Turf Club holding its first meeting one week later, before Bush Lot hosts the first of two meetings that is set for April 14, followed by Rising Sun’s meeting two weeks later.

In August, the KMTC track will come alive with the running-off of the Digicel Race Meeting on the 4th, followed by Rising Sun’s meeting on 18th and Port Mourant’s meet one week later. For September, Budhan, Ryan Crawford and Bush Lot will see action on the 8th, 22nd and 29th of that month respectively.

Following the Port Mourant meeting on December 15, horse racing fans and turfites can look forward to the much anticipated KMTC Boxing Day meeting which closes off this year’s calendar of events, before the Rising Sun Turf Club gallops off 2014 with its meeting on January 5. (Calvin Roberts)
