CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) – West Indies women and South Africa women will clash in a two-match Twenty20 International series at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia this weekend.
Both matches start at 16:00hrs Eastern Caribbean time and will be played tomorrow and Sunday before the play-off and Grand Final of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Caribbean T20 tournament.
The T20 games are being held after an exciting five-match One-Day International series in which the Caribbean side staged a remarkable come-back from two games down to draw level.
One game ended in a no-decision due to rain.
“We at the WICB are extremely proud of the West Indies Women’s team and what they have achieved as a team and as individual players,” said WICB president Dr Julian Hunte.
“The squad includes some of the most dominant players in the game at the moment and some of the most successful in the history of women’s cricket,” said Dr Hunte in reference to players like Stafanie Taylor awarded most outstanding cricketer of the just ended ODI series.
Taylor, whose separate four-wicket haul and half-century twice inspired Windies success over South Africa, is a two-time ICC Women’s Player-of-the-Year.
The women cricketers, from West Indies and South Africa, will also be special guests of Dr Hunte this weekend.
The event will be part of a special send-off to the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup in India, which will be played from January 31 to February 17.
“This will form the official send-off for the West Indies players and management before they depart for India on Tuesday. We have seen our team develop very well in the last three years and we have full confidence that they will do us proud again on the world stage,” said Dr Hunte.
