ON Monday I published an article captioned: “Hamilton Green Mayor with a difference” in which I highlighted the crass failings of the Mayor. There is no question as regards his ineptitude – the stinking decaying evidence is all around us. This man has done irreparable damage to the capital city over which he presides with such ease that one wonders and pause to ask the question: How can someone do such things and not be sanctioned or penalised in any way? The answer to that question is that
Green knows
that he can do these things because first and foremost he can practically do anything and get away with it. Secondly, he knows fully well that he has the tacit, if not outright support, of the opposition.
They in all their sweeping “mean and clean” programme have not stopped to think of the filth that is Georgetown or ever to chide Green on his decadence. The fact being, he is one of them and they will overlook his faults. They are prepared to protect him come what may. They have deliberately set him aside as good punishment for the PPP/C government. They will, in convenient amnesia, forget their campaign call for corrupt state officials to account or either leave public office as is the case of Minister Clement Rohee. They would call on Rohee to resign, but selectively leave Green out of that equation. What hypocrisy and damn foolishness is this?
The same could be said of the UG situation before the Nigerian Professor was chosen as Vice- Chancellor. There was the so-called grand exposure of all the corruption going on there. The Francises and Ifills were out in full force spewing bile with their rallying cry of corruption! corruption!
UG is a corrupt place, nothing good was happening there until the Nigerian Professor was chosen. Now it is all peace and quiet in the “Turkeyen valley.” And so it is, a strange quietude envelopes the UG campus until the next time government decides to do something there when those charlatans will erupt like a volcano. You cannot tell me that a government who is the sole provider of funds to this institution should not, and I repeat should not have a say in anything there? That is the real aim of their argument. For discussion purposes let us say hands off government, then who will finance the institution? Would it be Patsy Francis, Melissa Ifill or remotely so Freddie Kissoon. Utter hogwash! You see where I am going? These people make so many empty noises and in the end have nothing tangible to offer. Parliament is another prime manifestation of this foolishness. There are all of these wild unsubstantiated claims of corruption and nothing else that our noble house is put into disrepute.
Now back to Green’s Georgetown and his mindless antics. He will get away with his corruption, rubbish and all, because, he is facilitated by his comrades in Parliament.
This is the plain simple truth of the whole scenario. It has nothing to do with the government not channelling funds into the city’s coffers as Green would suggest, it all has to do with the foregoing reason. How many times hasn’t central government bailed him out? How many times hadn’t the government to pay City Council workers who were months behind in their salary payments? The answer is, too numerous to mention. This is the stark reality readers. And where in the world would you find a central government mandated to run the financial affairs of the city? The answer is Georgetown of course, unique and precious in its rubbish!
The point is, government may, by way of subventions, give aid to the city but in essence the City Council manages its own affairs. That is the way it is done in the civilised world and Georgetown should be no exception. What is taking place in Georgetown, and on a wider scale in Guyana, is the narrow, decrepit, sick nature of our partisan politics. When everything is seen in the light of race and/or politics that nation is doomed to failure. Guyana will go nowhere if this policy, attitude or mindset is allowed to flourish. I rest my case.
