I WISH to apprise you of my long delay in receiving my National Insurance pension by Mr. Dunbar, the Inspector attached to the Lethem office. I was employed in Lethem, with the Public Works Department, before the inception of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS)until my age of retirement in 1985.
I was employed in 1964 to 1985 continuously without any break of service. From the date of retirement to now I have been in constant battle to acquire my severance and other benefits due to me.
Specifically, I was taken through a lengthy and frustrating period with Mr. Dunbar the National Insurance Inspector responsible for Lethem, Region 9, to secure my benefits, a fact attested to by my employer and the Regional Democratic Council with all the relevant papers and documents. Many of these NIS officers are preventing us from receiving our hard-earned money by not submitting our claims and usurping the functions of the NIS Board, Editor, it is unlawful for Mr. Dunbar to discriminate against me because of my Amerindian race.
The general rule of the NIS is that if you don’t work you don’t get paid, but my contract letter with the Ministry of Public Works gave me the right to severance pay and other benefits for my service. I have paid enough NIS contributions and have been working long enough and I am entitled to my benefits from the National Insurance Funds. I have paid enough NIS contributions and I am also entitled to an old-age pension which I am not receiving because I am over 60 years old.
For decades, NIS Inspectors in Lethem Region 9, have been behaving like legislators, making and breaking the laws as they see fit for themselves. Workers are now covered by a raft of labour legislation passed in the National Assembly.
Editor, I was the sole breadwinner in my house and now that I am unemployed without any means of income, and my savings are about depleted, I am left to contend with daily household and medical expenses for myself and wife; I am more or less impoverished now.
I am asking that the President intervene into my matter urgently.
