After last year cancellation… UG Open/Career Day scheduled for February 15

THE Open/Career Day at the University of Guyana (UG), that was cancelled last year due to industrial action, will take place this year, on Friday, February 15.

It is scheduled to start at 09:30 hrs on the Turkeyen Campus, the Public Relations Officer, Ms. Paulette Paul disclosed in a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday.
According to her, plans are well on stream for the hosting of the event and they have already received confirmation of participation
from members of both the Private and Public Sectors.
Consequently, a number of Private and Public sector organisations will be partnering with UG to showcase career opportunities and requirements for employment within their respective entities.
“Partnering with these organisations provides an avenue for students to identify job opportunities that may best suit their needs. It also helps to foster a working alliance between the University and Private and Public Sector organisations to enable the University to align its programme offerings with national demands,” Paul said.
At the official opening ceremony, there will be a brief address to the students who are now entering their first academic year and those continuing as well as the distribution of certificates to the public and private sector participants and a cultural segment.
Paul indicated that Open/Career Day is intended to inform prospective students about available areas of study and prerequisites for admission to the University and expose current students to job opportunities and careers within their fields of study.

CAREER PATHS
“Prospective students (senior secondary school students and others) will learn about programmes in their respective areas of interest and explore possible career paths. Moreover, they will also have the opportunity to meet current undergraduate students and staff as they tour the campus and obtain information on every aspect of University life,” she said.
Various faculties of the University, such as the Agriculture & Forestry, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology will be involved in this exercise, as well as the Library, Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) and Berbice Campus.
The faculties and the Library will also be competing for the trophy for ‘the best display of programmes and services’ and Paul indicated that this encourages a high quality of displays.
She said there will also be a cultural fest at 15:00 hrs where there will be the demonstration of budding talent by a lot of gifted students from the campus.
Paul said a number of students lamented the lack of outlet for their talents and, as such, the University saw it fit to add this activity to the day’s programme.
She said the University is also inviting parents and anyone  interested in attending the institution in future to see what it has to offer.
Last year’s Open/Career Day was to take place on Friday, March 2 but strike actions embarked upon by lecturers, some students and members of the UG Workers’ Union (UGWU) caused it to be called off.
Organisations willing to partner with UG are invited to call the Public Relations Division on telephone number 222-5402.
