Motion to investigate criminal violence deferred

OPPOSITION Leader  David Granger, on Thursday evening, deferred the debate on his Motion to appoint a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to investigate the incidence of criminal violence from 2004 to 2010 in Guyana. Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, had prepared amendments, which he dispatched to the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly to be circulated to the Speaker and members of the House in accordance with prescribed parliamentary procedures.
However, for some reason, the Speaker received a copy of these amendments late and as such, did not get a chance to review them.
He then ruled that the amendments should not be recognised because they are not properly before the House. However, the Attorney-General explained that he submitted the amendments in accordance with the requisite rules governing how same should be brought before the House.
Realising that the Attorney-General was not at fault, the Opposition Leader decided to defer the debate on the Motion, a decision that was welcomed by the Speaker. The House will meet again on January 25.
