Benschop-led gang robbery, assault on Chinese… Police taking statements, Chief Magistrate to address photos taken in courtroom

FOLLOWING the looting and stoning of the store, Sino Mall, by a mob led by political activist, Mark Benschop on Wednesday, the police say they are processing the statements from the store owners in order to proceed with the next course of action.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that sleuths were up to yesterday afternoon recording statements from the Chinese nationals as to what happened at their store on the day in question.
It was reported that a Benschop-led group stormed the store on Croal Street, Georgetown, on Wednesday, even after the couple appeared in court this week and were charged for assaulting a minor who was found hiding in the living quarters of the building.
Benschop reportedly posted video footage of the incident on his website ‘Guyana Observer News’, and openly pleaded with persons to join him to humiliate the Chinese nationals, whose store had been robbed by angry passersby following the incident in which the child was allegedly assaulted in the store last week.
Benschop also videoed the court hearing without permission and uploaded it on his website and has since called on Guyanese to further intimidate the couple.
The move by Benschop has not gone unnoticed and Chinese nationals in Guyana have since expressed their concerns following the incident, citing that the Chinese man and his wife were unfairly treated and are fearful for their lives.
Benschop, a pardoned treason accused, has been teetering on the other side of the law, inciting the attack on the Chinese nationals who made a court appearance on Tuesday last.
Yesterday, efforts to get an official legal comment on what many are calling contempt of court were unsuccessful.
On Tuesday, Mark Benschop took a photograph of the two Chinese nationals while they were sitting in the Magistrate Court to answer to charges of assault.

The photos were taken without the permission of the sitting magistrate and without her knowledge.
When told of what transpired in the court on Tuesday, Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Carl Singh said that if the photograph was indeed taken, then the magistrate in whose court it happened knows exactly what has to be done.
The magistrate promised to speak to the Chronicle today.
