THE Guyana Beach Football Association (GBFA) will be launching its 2013 football season on Saturday, January 12 with the Banks DIH-sponsored League and Cup competition, to be held at the Bayrock Sand Reserve ground, Wismar, Linden. Ten teams will vie for the two-stage tournament. East Bank will be represented by Timerhi Panthers with the other nine teams coming out of Linden.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, president (ag) of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Frankie Wilson, Banks DIH Executive Carlton Joao and Permanent Secretary MCYS, Alfred King, will witness the march past of teams and are expected to make remarks.
Last year, Beach Soccer made a welcome return to Linden on Caricom Day when the Upper Demerara Football Association, in conjunction with the GFF and Garth Nelson of the USA, hosted an exciting day of Beach Soccer at the Bayrock ground.
The sport also benefited when the GBFA partnered with beverage giant Banks DIH Ltd and Linden Care Foundation to host the inaugural grassroots Open beach football tournament for schools in the Linden and surrounding areas.
From this tournament the schools involved benefited from counselling sessions on social activities, HIV and AIDS.
