In letter to Finance Minister NIS General Manager rescinds resignation : …reason for initial decision still unclear

GENERAL Manager of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), Doreen Nelson, yesterday rescinded her resignation almost 24 hours after she tendered it on Tuesday with immediate effect. The Guyana Chronicle was informed that Nelson dispatched a letter yesterday to Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh to that effect. Yesterday Dr. Singh confirmed that he did receive a letter which was signed by the general manager of the National Insurance Scheme, announcing her decision to rescind the resignation. The Finance Minister further stated that he did accept the letter.
However yesterday, efforts by this publication to confirm if the woman had reported to the National Insurance Scheme to execute her duties were futile. However, it was stated that the woman is likely to return to her office today and resume her duties as general manager of the scheme.
On Tuesday, Ms. Nelson announced at a board meeting that she was resigning from the NIS with immediate effect. The move, it was widely stated, stemmed from a decision by Nelson, the longest serving member of the NIS to apologise to a businessman over an issue in which she had intervened.
Also on Tuesday, a board meeting which was scheduled and which was to be chaired by the general manager, who filled in for chairman of the board, Dr. Roger luncheon, chose to deal with the Nelson issue, concerning an earlier directive of the board to her.
But when the matter was raised, it became clear that the general manager would not budge in her refusal to follow the directive of the board.
However, before the board could have announced what the next move against her would be, she announced her immediate resignation..
At the moment the NIS is coming in for a lot of flak for what is widely being touted as its inability to survive. There are also claims that the scheme made some bad investments.
Chairman of the NIS and head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, has been away from the scheme for a short period due to some medical problems.
Ms. Doreen Nelson chose to rescind her resignation even as the Insurance Scheme, which she has been heading since 2009, is going through some of its toughest trials since its establishment.
