Charged with killing nephew

ROY Lewis, 33, stood motionless in the New Amsterdam Court room as Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo read him the charge of murder, allegedly committed on his foster nephew Devon Lewis on December 27 last. He was not required to plead to the capital offence, which accused him of unlawfully killing his nephew as the latter lay asleep at Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice.

The unrepresented defendant had initially drunk a liquid suspected to be poisonous following the incident, and had been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he had been admitted. He was discharged from that health institution mere moments before being escorted to court.

The matter has been transferred to the Sisters Magistrate’s Court for hearing on February 12.

Meanwhile, eighteen-year-old Devon Lewis, who died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds, was buried yesterday.
