Convict busted with marijuana in prison compound

A CONVICTED prisoner currently serving a two-year sentence for escaping from lawful custody and break and enter and larceny, was, allegedly, nabbed with a bag containing 851 grammes of suspected cannabis (marijuana). The bust was made by an alert officer, who was working within the compound of the New Amsterdam Prison, in Berbice, about 21:30 hrs last Friday.
The officer had observed the convict, who was carrying out water fetching duties, acting suspiciously with a bag over his shoulder.
The inmate was ordered to stop but refused to heed the instruction and continued walking towards the male dormitory.
The officer followed him but the suspect went out of his view prior to being apprehended with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the plant which he had in the bag with cigarettes and spoons.
Sources close to the continuing police investigations said the prisoner may have been aided by a member of staff.
