Kumar wishes National CT20 team all the best

DIRECTOR of Sport within the National Sports Commission (NSC) Neil Kumar yesterday morning urged the Veerasammy Permaul-led National CT20 team all the best in their endeavours, as they departed Windjammer Hotel in Kitty for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport en route to Trinidad and later St Lucia. While he took the time to applaud the Rayon Griffith-led senior selection panel of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) whose Assistant Secretary Dru Bahadur was present, for selecting a strong unit of players to represent the country, Kumar charged the players to give of their best and win the tournament, the final one of its kind.
“As you are aware, this is the final time the West Indies Cricket Board would be having this tournament, as they will be switching to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) very soon so I want to urge you to go out there, give of your best to ensure Guyana win the title and at the same time, market yourself for the CPL,” stated Kumar.
Like so many cricket pundits out there, Kumar believes the Guyanese have a very good chance of lifting the final version of the title, having lifted the inaugural one three years ago, under the astute leadership of Ramnaresh Sarwan.
“Let me congratulate you for being selected to represent Guyana and I must say that I honestly feel this is an extremely good team, balanced with experience; and not only have you won the inaugural tournament, this is one that each and everyone of you must be scheduled for success.
“Here is where you can market yourself for the CPL, a tournament that can take you further in life, one that can make you a better man and also open you up for auction overseas as well, so I want to urge you to go out there and lift the final Regional T20 title.”
He added, “We have a very strong batting lineup in (Shiv) Chanderpaul, (Ramnaresh) Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine as the spearhead, while we have a bowling lineup which includes Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo along with young Ronsford Beaton, whom I am impressed with as a fast bowler.
There is also Deonarine who will be giving support to the spinners, while I believe Leon Johnson should have gone a far way with his cricket, while Christopher Barnwell commenced playing the game with our Ministry in the Under-15 Schoolboys team.
“Having said that, I must say you are all good quality players chosen by the selectors who feel you are worthy enough to not only represent Guyana, but go on to win the trophy, for which I wish you all the best of luck and God’s blessings on this sojourn,” stated Kumar.
Like Kumar, Bahadur took the time to wish the team all the best on behalf of the GCB, adding his hopes for an injury-free tournament for the Guyanese.
“We at the GCB are presently going through our own issues, but we have done our best to get you into the tournament, as we are very confident that you guys will go there and represent Guyana. We expect you to do well to the extent that you will lift the trophy on January 20 and for that you have our support,” said Bahadur.
Permaul moved the vote of thanks on behalf of his team, who will be playing their first match Monday night (20:00hrs) against the Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
The 14-man squad reads: Veerasammy Permaul (captain), Christopher Barnwell, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Trevon Griffith, Royston Crandon, Derwin Christian, Ronsford Beaton, Devendra Bishoo, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Rajiv Ivan, Steven Jacobs, Jonathan Foo, Narsingh Deonarine and Leon Johnson, with Esaun Crandon (coach) and Alvin Johnson (manager).
