Jail Delivery marks closure of October Criminal Session in Demerara… 185 of 227 remand prisoners awaiting trial at January Session for murder

THE Jail Delivery presented to Justice James Bovell-Drakes by Prison Officer Roxanne Parkinson on Tuesday, January 2, 2013 at the High Court in Georgetown marked closure of the October Criminal Session and opening of the January Criminal Session in Demerara.

It revealed that 227 inmates of the Georgetown Prison are awaiting trial for various offences, and 185 of those inmates have been charged with murder.
The other offences are attempted murder – 5; carnal knowledge – 18;  incest – 2; armed robbery – 3;  buggery – 1; aiding and abetting murder – 1;   aiding and abetting to commit murder  – 1  discharging firearm with intent – 5; and manslaughter – 6.
Twenty-one of those 227 offenders are asking for  early trials.
