GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Tournament … Sunburst Camptown lift the title … Northern Rangers stun GDF for third

SUNBURST Camptown became $4M richer on the first night of the New Year, when they claimed the crown of the Guyana Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Knockout Cup at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground.

Of course, it did not come overnight since the tournament began in December when Camptown defeated Houston Stars, Kwakwani Strikers and Northern Rangers on their way to the final where Riddim Squad were comfortably defeated 2–0.
Riddim Squad had to settle for the runner-up prize of $2.5M with that loss but they had a great tournament.
They knocked out the inaugural fourth-place finishers, Beacon United, in the round-of-16 then the inaugural runners-up, Fruta Conquerors in the quarter-final round. Added to that, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were also victims of Riddim Squad’s wrath in the semis.
Finishing third were Northern Rangers, who carted off $1.5M for their 2-1 upset victory over GDF in the opening battle on Tuesday night. GDF had to settle for the fourth place prize of $1M dollars.
Northern Rangers, another one of the underdog teams, claimed victories over Blueberry Hill and Santos in the opening fixtures but lost to Sunburst Camptown 3–0 in the semi-final.
In the feature match of the night, Riddim Squad put forth a good performance against the much more experienced Camptown side who played more composed football with meaningful passes which constantly built up genuine threatening plays that were critical.
Riddim Squad managed to keep the eventual victors at bay for the entire first half, but Camptown drew first blood six minutes into the second half through a Devon Forde strike.
Forde then got another opportunity and took full advantage of the situation to put Camptown up by two in the 61st minute. Riddim Squad were thrown off their rhythm and never recovered but did contest a good match later on.
Earlier in the night, GDF, as expected scored first against Northern Rangers in the 20th minute, compliments of Desford Williams. The opposition then drew the scores level when Frederick Boyce found the equaliser in the 37th minute.
What was stunning was the 55th minute goal scored by Devon Bowen for Northern Rangers to give his team the lead. With GDF in search of the equaliser, Rangers scored yet another goal to leave the opposition baffled.
Omali Nassy scored in the 70th minute to put the victory beyond doubt, ending a good run for Northern Rangers in the second edition of the tournament.
