Roy Lewis faces a criminal charge of threatening language against the now deceased Devon Lewis, and had been expected to return to the Sisters Magistrate’s Court for a trial set for February 4.
Relatives disclosed that the ongoing problems between the two males had caused the young man to start staying with relatives in Georgetown, but he returned home on Saturday to spend the festive season with his household.
His very distraught mother, Roxanne Lewis, managed to tell this newspaper that her son was the second of her five children, and that he did not deserve such a death.
She recalled being awakened from sleep by shouts. “I cannot remember who called, but I ran to the scene. I did not get to see my son then. They had already taken him to the hospital. By the time I got there, he was already dead. He had several stab wounds. I did not count the marks,” she disclosed.
At the murder scene, a short distance from his home, blood remained splattered on the walls of the modest bedroom, living room and front stairs. The bed in which the teenager was lying when he met his death was soaked with blood, as were the nearby pillow and curtains. His girlfriend, La Toya Whyte, who lived there with her parents, sustained injury to her left hand during the incident, but was treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and sent away.
Her Father, Percy Whyte, related that he was asleep in the lower flat of the two-storeyed building when he heard shouts and a thumbing sound. He rushed up the front stairs to be confronted with a bolted door, but after repeatedly banging thereon, the door was opened, and he saw the suspect armed with a long bloodied knife which he held in upraised hands.
“In a quick second I held on to his wrist and flicked him over the landing, resulting in him falling onto the wooden picket fence, which broke,” Whyte said.
Earlier that night, villagers had seen the suspect at the village Fun Day brandishing a knife, but had not overheard him saying anything to anyone. However, he was seen following the young couple during the night, and neighbours who are aware of the ongoing problem between the duo suggested that he may have laid wait in nearby bushes for the opportune time to carry out his deadly attack.
This newspaper was told that the suspect was calling the mobile phone of his now deceased nephew just before the lad was killed, and the general consensus is that he wanted to know the precise location of the lad.
He is alleged to have taken the opportunity after Wilburg Whyte, a policeman and occupant of the home, had left the home.
It was observed that the front door on the upper flat was secured by bolts only on the inside, and with the cop leaving the house, it became unsecured.
It was during that period that the assailant is alleged to have removed two pailing staves from the northern fence, ingested the suspected poisonous liquid, then mounted the stairs, bolting the door and going to the middle bedroom where Devon Lewis was lying, and inflicted several stab wounds on the defenseless man.
In court documents dated May 3, 2012, Devon Lewis recounted that he was not on speaking terms with his uncle since he was aged 14 years. The falling out stemmed from his uncle telling him that he would kill him if he told anyone that he [the deceased] had had anal sex with him.
The teenager had reported that during the falling out in May, the relative had placed a metal-handled knife to his neck, telling him, “Remember what I tell you. I will kill you…” A scuffle had ensued, resulting in Devon Lewis receiving injuries to his left hand and abdomen in the presence of several witnesses.
Devon Lewis had also reported that while he had never told anyone what he had been forced to do, the suspect would always threaten him; and when he sought employment at Bermine Cement Packing facility, his attacker had also sought employment there, and was in the habit of puncturing his bicycle wheel, and throwing suspicious liquids in his milk.
The police have begun investigating this incident.
