RESIDENTS of Haslington/Golden Grove are contending that unwanted residue from meat is being dumped nightly into the district trench causing it to become a habitat for reptiles and other creatures. Some of the residents are of the view that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) should respond promptly to this matter. According to residents the surrounding drains, both in Haslinton/Golden Grove and Nabalics, pose a health and environmental hazard to the community.
However persons living in these areas stated that crocodiles, anacondas and other reptiles are a threat to both villagers/students attending the nursery schools.
Residents have noted that crocodiles emerge from water at nights and sometimes in the day and come on land.
Others are disputing that the irregularity in cleaning of trenches, and keeping the surrounding clean and free from garbage would eliminate the crawling anacondas and caimans that are evident.
Some of the residents have stressed they are disgusted with the infestation of mosquitoes from the areas that needs cleaning and desilting.
However in a daily newspaper an article dated December 19 the Neighbourhood Democratic Council came under criticism stating that the waterways in the communities are no longer cleaned, resulting in choked system with heavy infestation of all forms of wildlife within their environs.
Concerned residents also complained of malfunctioning of the slaughter house poses a threat since those who slaughter animals discard the waste in the waterways, leaving the crocodiles and anacondas to feast on them.
Efforts to get a comment from the relevant authority proved futile.
